Game Breakers Card Condition Overview
Game Breakers Card Condition Overview
At Game Breakers (GB), our goal is to provide a consistent and transparent card-buying experience. Clear condition standards help reduce uncertainty, set realistic expectations, and ensure that both buyers and sellers have a common understanding of what to expect when purchasing or selling cards.
Game Breakers uses the following card conditions:
- Near Mint (NM)
- Lightly Played (LP)
- Moderately Played (MP)
- Heavily Played (HP)
- Damaged
Mint and Gem Mint are not used as standard conditions for ungraded cards at Game Breakers. Cards described as Near Mint are expected to meet the criteria outlined below rather than being represented as Mint or Gem Mint.
Our condition standards are intended to provide a consistent point of reference for both our customers and our team. We recognize that cards can experience imperfections through manufacturing, handling, storage, and use. Our guidelines are designed to help evaluate those imperfections consistently and fairly.
As new products, printing techniques, and card types are introduced, our standards may occasionally be updated or expanded. When necessary, Game Breakers may provide additional guidance for specific products or unusual manufacturing characteristics.
This overview provides a general explanation of our card-condition standards. Individual cards may have a combination of imperfections, and their final condition will be determined by considering the type, severity, and number of imperfections present.
Understanding Card Condition
The condition of a card is determined by the number, type, and severity of imperfections present.
Imperfections may result from:
- Playing or shuffling
- Handling
- Storage
- Shipping
- Manufacturing or printing
- Cutting or alignment during production
Common imperfections can include scratches, scuffs, edge wear, whitening, corner wear, bends, creases, dents, surface wear, and other abnormalities.
When evaluating a card, Game Breakers considers three important aspects of the card's overall integrity:
Structure
The physical condition, stability, and structural integrity of the card and its cardstock.
Playability
Whether the card remains suitable for its intended use as a collectible or game piece.
Authentication
Whether the card remains sufficiently intact for its authenticity to be reasonably verified through the manufacturer's identifying features.
In general, imperfections that significantly compromise the structural integrity or authenticity of a card may result in the card being classified as Damaged.
Near Mint (NM)
Near Mint cards show minimal signs of wear and generally appear very close to an unplayed card.
A Near Mint card should have a clean overall appearance, with crisp corners and edges and a largely unmarked surface.
Minor imperfections may be present, such as:
- Very slight edge wear
- A small amount of whitening
- One or two minor surface scratches
- Other small imperfections that are difficult to notice during normal viewing
A Near Mint card should not have significant creasing, bending, scratching, corner damage, or other prominent defects.
The Near Mint category includes cards ranging from virtually flawless examples to cards displaying a small number of very minor imperfections.
Important: Near Mint does not mean perfect. Minor manufacturing or handling imperfections may be present.
Lightly Played (LP)
Lightly Played cards show noticeable but relatively minor signs of handling or use.
A Lightly Played card may have:
- Minor edge wear or whitening
- Light surface scratches or scuffs
- Minor corner wear
- Other visible but relatively limited imperfections
Imperfections may be noticeable upon inspection, but there should be no major damage or significant concerns with the card's structural integrity.
A card may have several minor imperfections and still qualify as Lightly Played, provided the overall amount and severity of wear remain within the expected range for this condition.
Moderately Played (MP)
Moderately Played cards show a more noticeable level of wear or damage than Lightly Played cards.
Examples may include:
- Moderate edge or corner wear
- Noticeable surface scratching or scuffing
- More extensive whitening
- Bends or creases
- Multiple types of moderate imperfections
- Other visible signs of handling or use
Certain bends, creases, peeling, or exposure to moisture may still qualify as Moderately Played provided they do not significantly compromise the card's structural integrity.
The overall combination of imperfections is considered when determining whether a card falls within the Moderately Played range.
Heavily Played (HP)
Heavily Played cards show substantial wear and are visibly more worn than Moderately Played cards.
A Heavily Played card may exhibit:
- Extensive edge or corner wear
- Significant whitening
- Numerous scratches or scuffs
- Creasing or bending
- Multiple moderate imperfections
- Other significant cosmetic wear
Heavily Played cards can have a considerable amount of wear and may look substantially used. However, they must still retain their basic structural integrity and must remain reasonably capable of being authenticated.
A card with severe damage that compromises its structure or authenticity should instead be classified as Damaged.
Damaged
Damaged cards have significant imperfections or damage that exceed the standards of Heavily Played condition.
Examples may include:
- Major creases or bends
- Tears or splits
- Significant border or corner damage
- Severe scratching or surface damage
- Substantial water or liquid damage
- Major structural damage
- Foreign substances
- Other damage that materially affects the card's integrity
A card may also be considered Damaged when a manufacturing defect or alteration significantly affects the card.
Game Breakers does not consider cards with significant foreign substances—such as food, liquid, or other materials—to be suitable for normal card listings.
Manufacturing Defects & Alterations
Manufacturing defects are evaluated based on their type, severity, and impact on the card.
Examples may include:
- Significant miscuts
- Severe printing shifts
- Crimping
- Major print defects
- Other substantial manufacturing abnormalities
Cards that have been intentionally altered may also be classified as Damaged. Examples include:
- Added signatures
- Stamps
- Paint
- Marker
- Altered artwork
- Other aftermarket modifications
In some cases, a card with a defect or alteration may be more appropriately sold with photographs clearly showing the issue.
Manufacturing quality can vary between products and releases. The fact that a particular product is known to have common printing or manufacturing issues does not automatically mean those issues are ignored when determining condition. Where a product has a widespread, inherent characteristic, Game Breakers may evaluate that characteristic on a case-by-case basis.
Foil Cards
Foil cards are evaluated using the same general condition standards as their non-foil counterparts.
Because foil surfaces can make certain imperfections easier to see, extra care may be taken when examining:
- Surface scratches
- Scuffing
- Printing imperfections
- Foil bubbling
- Speckled or uneven foiling
- Curling or warping
Some foil cards, particularly certain trading card game products, can naturally exhibit curling or warping. Minor curling does not automatically make a card Damaged; the severity of the issue and the overall condition of the card will be considered.
Foil cards should be evaluated based on the same principles of severity, quantity, and overall impact used for non-foil cards.
A Note About Condition
Card grading is not an exact science. Two cards of the same issue may have different combinations of imperfections, and individual imperfections can vary significantly in severity.
At Game Breakers, our objective is to grade consistently, fairly, and conservatively while giving customers an accurate representation of what they are purchasing.
When in doubt, we believe it is better to under-promise and over-deliver than to describe a card in better condition than it actually is.
For particularly valuable, unusual, or condition-sensitive cards, Game Breakers may provide additional photographs or specific condition notes so customers can make an informed purchasing decision.
Our goal is simple: when you receive your card, its condition should match your expectations.
